Chairperson’s Message
Kia ora koutou,
Behind every headline about rising unemployment, homelessness, or the growing cost of living are whānau facing daily challenges. These challenges can feel overwhelming. For each statistic there is a story, and for each story, someone carrying a heavy load. Visionwest Waka Whakakitenga is there in those moments, walking alongside with compassion, practical support, and hope.
This year, I’ve been especially encouraged by the long-term solutions being built. New and ongoing housing developments represent more than buildings – they offer stability, dignity, and the possibility of transformation for those who call them home.
At the same time, important work has been done behind the scenes to strengthen our systems and technology. These improvements are already creating a smoother, more responsive experience for those who turn to Visionwest, ensuring support reaches whānau quickly and with the care they deserve. Strong systems also give us the foundation to grow sustainably as needs increase across our communities.
Our shared leadership has continued to deepen, guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi, our values, and faith. Our leaders journey side by side, strengthening collaboration and embedding Te Tiriti in practice across all we do.
What moves our Trustees and all who engage with Visionwest are the stories that emerge from our mahi. These stories speak of whānau facing hardship yet finding new strength, of dignity being restored, and of support that leads to lasting transformation. These stories remind us that the impact is never limited to one person – hope spreads outward, strengthening entire families and communities. In them, we see God’s love at work, showing that even in the hardest seasons, light can break through, lives can be renewed, and futures reimagined.
None of this mahi would be possible without the faithfulness, generosity, and dedication of so many – our Trustees, staff, Glen Eden Baptist Church, funders, business partners, and volunteers. To Lisa and Matua Fred, whose faithful leadership has guided Visionwest with wisdom, integrity, and compassion, my heartfelt thanks.
As scripture encourages us in Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” May this report renew your strength and inspire your hope, just as it has for those whose lives have been transformed with support from Visionwest.
Ngā mihi,
Daniel Barthow, Board Chair
